The Airwaves of Zion: Radio and Religion in Appalachia
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (June, 1993)
Author: Howard Dorgan
Average review score:

A tremendous book outlining a fading Appalachian tradition.
The radio preachers in Dorgan's book are nothing like the flashy televangelists that one sees regularly on television. Rather, this is religious broadcasting at its most grassroots level. These are "real" people from Appalachia who have what they believe is a mission. They are people who have a deep-seated faith that has seen them through the turbulent times often inherent in Appalachian life. Dorgan treats his four subjects with sensitivity and respect.

Released in 1993, the book addresses what Dorgan sees as a vanishing part of Appalachian life -- the live Sunday radio preacher. Having just returned from those portions of Appalachian in which these preachers have broadcast, I was pleased to hear that seven years later the genre is far from dead, although I would suspect that Dorgan's assessment is a definite trend.

"The Airwaves of Zion" is a unique book that will be readily taken to heart by those interested in Appalchian Religion and/or Religious Broadcasting.

All About Intelligence: Human, Animal and Artificial
Published in Paperback by International Specialized Book Services (November, 1991)
Author: Robert Howard
Average review score:

An excellent overview!
Dr. Howard has written an excellent overview of the concept of intelligence. He covers human intelligence, including recent definitions, testing, and education. His chapter on testing I found most interesting since he discusses the most popular tests and their limitations. There is an excellent section on gifted children. The sections on animal and artificial intelligence is fairly sweeping, but he does present the main ideas very clearly. I found this book very easy to read and enjoyable.

All About Prosperity
Published in Audio Cassette by Unity (November, 1999)
Author: Howard Caesar
Average review score:

PROSPERITY AS A STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS
This definitely is NOT a "get-rich-quick" book. In six lessons, Howard Caesar lays down spiritual principles for attaining a prosperity consciousness. He gives affirmations, exercises, and techniques. Prosperity isn't just money, it includes health, relationships, all areas that affect our sense of well being. Caesar gives many anecdotes, some from his personal experience, as well as materiel from various sources. Especially good is "You Don't Need A Nickel".

This ois a very spiritual group of lessons, but it does deal with everyday practicalities. Get it!

This book is easy to read as it is in note form. The conditions are outlined alphabetically. The book outlines the homeopathic, acupressure, nutrition, and herbal treatment for each of the conditions listed. In my opinion, it can be used by either the lay person or a professional. Easy to use and easy to read. Thanks Dr. Hassman, we needed somethng like this.

Alternatives to Domestic Violence: A Homework Manual for Battering Intervention Groups
Published in Paperback by Taylor & Francis (01 February, 1999)
Authors: Kevin A. Fall, Shareen Howard, and June E. Ford
Average review score:

An excellent book for DV treatment providers
The individual that used to co-facilitated Domestic Violence Treatment groups with me found this book here and ordered it for us to use. We both appreciated the different topics provided in the book, the way it was set-up, the many great assignments to use in group and how issues are presented. It follows the Duluth model, which is what our program follows. The gentlemen in group also enjoy the activities and find the material interesting and applicable. I strongly recommend this book to others to use individually or in the group setting. I have looked through a variety of different books to use in group, though was never instantly attracted to any...though this one was different. The assignments/activities in the book are done in such a way that many of the group members share the information with their partners, thus perpetuating the learning cycle.

Excellent feedback from family members
As the Director of Social Work at a Retirement and Skilled Nursing Facility, this is one of the books that I loan out to families. I have had nothing but positive feedback from the families who have borrowed the book, and they have invariably told me that they found it easy to read, highly informative, and very helpful for them overall. In fact, I am visiting Amazon.com right now to order 2 more copies of the book at the residents' family members' request! -- Victoria T.Carey, MSW, LICSW

America As Story: Historical Fiction for Middle and Secondary Schools
Published in Paperback by Amer Library Assn Editions (February, 1997)
Authors: Rosemary K. Coffey and Elizabeth F. Howard
Average review score:

A phenominal resource for teachers and YA librarians
I discovered this book quite by accident while weeding the reference collection of the public library in which I work.
"Where do you keep the historical fiction?" and "Where can I find a historical fiction book about the [Civil War | Revolutionary War | French and Indian War | War of 1812 | Oregon Trail | original 13 colonies | etc. etc.]" are questions that come up nearly every day in my line of work.
Until I found this book, I had to rely largely on memory from my own childhood or from classes I had taken in graduate school to make recommendations.
This book is well organized, possessed of a useful index, and true to its task.

Highly recommended for teachers, librarians, and parents alike.
